Marion and Laura
Marion with Laura about 1934
Wells Coates married Marion Grove in 1927; Laura was born in 1930. 'So when Marion came', Coates wrote in 1927, 'I found for the first time a personal direction, and this direction led me away from intellectual abstractions...' Their passionate marriage became deeply unhappy. Letters between them trace the progress of their worsening relationship, which ended in separation in 1937. 'How awful everything in the modern world is...' Coates wrote in 1938, 'surely there must be somewhere one can build a life not so lonely and unforgiving as mine is, now. How I wish you were with me, who understand but no longer love me.'
